Japhet is a firebird/phoenix and the royal guardian of Zone 2. As one of the three guardians, he must be defeated by the Batter in order to purify his respective Zone.

Appearance/CharacteristicsEdit

Appearance-wise, Japhet first appears to be a cat. This is soon 'explained' by the Judge - the cat is actually his brother Valerie, who seems to have gone crazy and became a guardian.

Upon climbing to the top of the Library, it is revealed that Japhet is in fact a firebird using Valerie as a host. The battle against him is then fought in three stages -

  • On the first stage, Japhet can be seen as a bird's head poking out of Valerie's mouth.
  • On the second stage, Japhet has partly emerged, which gives the look of a cat with a bird's head.
  • On the third stage, Japhet changes into his massive 'true form'. Valerie is hanging limply on his head, his body nearly bisected by Japhet's neck. Japhet is a large swanlike bird with a long tail and square feet, often interpreted as hooves by fans.

Personality/BackstoryEdit

Japhet was once a benevolent and kind guardian, caring for the residents of Zone 2 as if they were his children. With time, however he became violent and angry, believing that the Elsen had been ungrateful and stating that "like all disobedient children, they [should] be punished".

He is mentioned to harbour a great love for books and bold colors which would explain the great library and its bold magenta color. He may also have a particular attachment for orchids as there is an orchid painted on the wall near the top of the library. Several pages found in the upper levels of the library tells a story alluding to Japhet. The numbers found on the bottom of these pages are used to solve a block puzzle in order to reach the roof. The story is as follows:

Drawing from his waning forces, he created the Library, more beautiful than ever before. Its height pierced the smoky clouds and there he stood.
Much like a guardian angel, he had done everything for them. He had brought them peace, security and entertainment. Such was his generosity.
For a while, that was all good and well for all, they enjoyed the new land with the innocence of a child. They were running down the streets, enjoying ...
But the dynamics of the world soon drove the people mad. They forgot about their joys and eventually succumbed to their neurosis of fear and worries.
Meanwhile, the Flaming Winged Sovereign weeped on his throne, their joys saddened to have been forgotten by Man. He had no more time for their worries.
And so the Flaming Bird turned into a cat and the cat into a Ruler. Driven insane by his anger and sadness, he summoned forth a storm of evil spirits upon his subjects. His madness had ...
While the spectres where destroying the world he had created, he sought helter [sic] at the summit of his most wonderful creation, the Great Library.
There was nothing else to be done but wait for the man who would rise forth to destroy him. For deep inside his soul, there was no doubt the what he did was evil. The End

RelationshipsEdit

The Judge is the brother of Valerie, the cat Japhet possesses.

Pre-Batter : The RoomEdit

During The Room, it is revealed that Japhet is a friend of Hugo. In this part, he is shown as a regular-sized bird.

In BattleEdit

Japhet is first fought in the library of Zone 2, as just a cat after claiming he can control the specters.

Valerie

Japhet as Valerie

Royal Guardian of Zone 2Edit
HP: ??? (1000) / CP: ???. Second boss (?)Edit
Competence: ???Edit
Experience: 300. Credits: 150.Edit

In this form, he is relatively weak, save for a decent amount of health. In the middle of this initial fight he calls upon spectres to his aid, only to find none appearing; immediately afterward he will hit both the batter and Alpha for a large amount.

Once defeated, he flees and the Batter gains Omega, one of the Add-Ons, which specializes in healing status conditions, along with unconventional attacks (random attack damage/ignores enemy defense/attacks PC). Later, Japhet is encountered for a second time after entering Bismark, the residential area. He is seen talking to the citizens but turns violent when they refuse to acknowledge or take him seriously because he has the body of a cat (Valerie). He then summons ghosts to attack the citizens which all must be defeated within 4 minutes (ignoring battle time) by the Batter.

Japhet is encountered for the last time at the top of the library and it is here where he reveals his true form through three stages of the battle.

Royal Guardian of Zone 2Edit
HP: ??? / CP: ???. Second bossEdit
Competence: ???Edit
Experience: ???. Credits: ???.Edit

The proper fight against Japhet is one of the easier bosses in the game. He doesn't do much damage until his third form, and by then he's already taken quite a bit of damage. His attacks may inflict status effects (Tenor may Poison, and Alto may Mute, for example). Japhet's 'Head-Voices' has no secondary effect but is one of the strongest attacks in the game and deals over 150 damage. Remember to heal occasionally (you should have Save Second Base by now) and cure any status effects before they can do too much damage, mainly Sleep, which will cripple your team. Once he casts Head-Voices, heal with Luck Tickets or Save Second Base, before going back on the offensive.

Trivia Edit

  • Japhet shows signs of betrayal to the queen as well as being able to control the spectres, which the queens forces are known to oppose.
  • Japhet's battle theme during his final form is called 'Minuit a fond la caisse', which roughly translates to 'Midnight at full speed'. Alias Conrad Coldwood commented that it actually is the translation for Lost in Translation's movie within a movie, Midnight Velocity. (need source)
  • The cat mask Zacharie wears is not made from Valerie's face despite the common fan theory. Mortis himself confirmed as much on his deviantArt. Sources here and here.
  • Japhet can be seen patrolling the corridors of the shopping mall.
  • Japhet's competences (Alto, Head-Voices, etc.) are all named after types of singing ranges and musical terms. This fits his theme as a firebird, as phoenixes in legends are known for singing.
  • Mortis Ghost has confirmed on his deviantArt how Japhet ended up inside Valerie here.
